Angels Have Pressing Needs That Cliff Lee Does Not Solve
After two days of apparent hibernation at the Winter Meetings. Tony Reagins and the Halos emerged from their slumber to cause quite the stir when it was reported by multiple outlets that they too are a participant in the Cliff Lee sweepstakes.
So what does this all mean? Has Cliff Lee supplanted Carl Crawford as the Angels number one target? Do the Angels have a trade in the works to shop one of their starters? Lets examine this interest in Lee just a little further.
Ultimately the signing of Lee given the current Angels rotation does not make much sense.
Signing Lee to a mega deal would seem to decrease the likelihood of the Angels signing the trio of Adrian Beltre , Carl Crawford and Rafael Soriano as many thought they would. This would be a mistake given the current state of the team. On paper the Angels appear to already have a very formidable starting rotation with Weaver, Haren, Santana, Piniero and Kazmir or…..??
I know some will say: ” You can never have enough quality pitching and Cliff Lee is a bonafide ace” and I agree with this statement but at the same time I am more than cognisant that the Angels have bigger holes that need to be filled. third Base , an impact offensive player , and a closer being the immediate three that come to mind.
So while the temptation of trotting out a starting rotation of :
Lee , Weaver , Haren , Santana , Piniero is certainly salivating it wont mean nearly as much if Alberto Callaspo or Brandon Wood is starting at third base, Fernando Rodney is closing games and Kendry Morales and Torii Hunter have no one to set the table in front of them or to protect them deeper in the lineup. My hope is the Angels are merely tossing their name in the hat to drive up the price for Lee’s acquisition for AL rivals Texas and New York. Otherwise the only real news we’ve heard this week could be the worse.
