The Angels went out and pounded the Rangers 15 -4 Tuesday night led by former top prospects Mark Trumbo ( 3 hits 4 RBI’s, 2 Runs) Peter Bourjos ( 4 hits ,3 RBI’S , 3 Runs) and Hank Conger ( 2 hits, 2 RBI’s and 2 Runs). After the game word quickly spread that another former top prospect Brandon Wood had been designated for assignment to make room for the return of shortstop Erick Aybar. Since Wood is out of options this designation would mean the Angels have 10-days to either trade, release or place Wood on waivers for another team to claim. In short its likely Wood’s star crossed career as an Angel is over. The once jewel of the farm system failed miserably when finally given the chance to play everyday and his career MLB totals stand at a paltry .168/.197/.259 with 11 Home Runs, 13 walks and 153 strikeouts in 463 at bats. Accept for a few games in September of 2008 Wood appeared largely over matched at the major league level. It will be interesting to see if a big league club is willing to take a shot on Wood with the hopes the 26 year old can somehow regain the minor league form that saw him crush 43 home runs in 2005 and climb all the way to the #3 rated prospect in baseball.
Sometimes a change of scenery is all it takes to make your move.
