As we get closer and closer to Spring Training, you’re going to hear more and more about prospects being invited to big league camp. For the Angels, it seems like that process is already underway.
In the 2009 draft, the Angels had two first round picks, their own and the Yankees pick due to their signing of Mark Teixeira. With the Yankees pick, the Angels took some guy you may have heard of in Mike Trout. With their own pick, they took outfielder Randal Grichuk.
Grichuk tweeted yesterday that the Angels have invited him to big league camp for Spring Training.Grichuk played in high A ball last year and put up pretty good numbers. He had a .298/.335/.488 slash line with 18 home runs and 71 RBI. He’s only 21 years old and wont turn 22 until August. The Angels clearly have high hopes for Grichuk. They wouldn’t want to get a look at him in big league camp if they didn’t think he could play.
Grichuk played in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit .228 with two home runs and five RBI in 57 at bats. I can’t see Grichuk getting more than a few at-bats with the big league club during spring training. The Angels only want him up with the team so they can get a look at him for the future. I think the earliest he gets an MLB at-bat is probably September 2014.
Good luck to Grichuk during Spring Training. It won’t be the last big league camp that he will be attending.
