Ryan Madson Throwing Is A Good Sign For The Los Angeles Angels

A little news as we are 18 days til pitchers and catchers report to spring training. News on a very important pitcher for the Angels in 2013. Ryan Madson has begun to throw in his return from Tommy John surgery. Madson underwent the surgery last April and was questionable to start the season.

With the question marks in the rotation, the Angels bullpen is going to be heavily relied on to lock down games in order for this team to reach the potential everyone thinks it has and Madson is going to be a part of that. Madson got the one year deal in the off-season as sort of a prove it contract coming off of surgery and the Angels got a discounted deal on a closer.

Ernesto Frieri did the job for most of the year, however, he’s not really viewed as a closer type moving forward. That’s why it was important for the team to get a closer and they did that with Madson. It’s also not that surprising that he’s throwing this early. It’s easier for a short reliever to come back anyway since he’s not gonna throw as many innings.

It’s going to be important for Madson to be closely monitored. I bet Frieri gets some shots at closing games, especially early on. I can’t see Madson going back to back days early, and I’m sure he will be on a pitch count. When he warms up, he’ll be coming in as well. They won’t have him throw and then not bring him in.
