Los Angeles Angels News & Notes: Weaver, Pujols & Madson

Full squad workouts are in full effect for the Angels beginning this weekend. All players have reported, with Luis Rodriguez‘s visa situation resolved. Let’s take a look at some of the other news around the Angels training camp this weekend.

Weaver For Opening Day: In a surprise to no one, even though there won’t be an offical announcement of it, Jered Weaver is on target to get the ball opening day against the Cincinnati Reds. Weaver is without question the Angels best pitcher and without a doubt should be the opening day starter. Once you do the math of how his starts go in spring, you’ll see that he’ll be lined up there.

Pujols Taking His Time: Albert Pujols has yet to begin running and won’t be playing in spring training games when they start up next weekend. He had off-season knee surgery, which is why he probably won’t be playing in the World Baseball Classic either. He doesn’t need to rush. Spring Training is extra long this year. It’s not like he’s fighting for a job either.

Madson on Monday: Ryan Madson‘s MRI this week was clear and he’ll begin to throw again tomorrow. At this point, it’s a long shot for him to be ready on April 1. This was the risk the Angels ran when signing him, however, Ernesto Frieri should be able to hold down the fort for the first month or so. The Angels bullpen is deeper and will be better equipped to handle a situation like this.
