Vargas Leads Angels to Victory Against Rays

For the rubber match against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Los Angeles Angels sent out Jason Vargas who has struggled a bit in his last two starts since coming back from the DL. Meanwhile the Rays sent out Jake Odorizzi for only his six career start.

Like much of the series, the story of the game revolved around the pitching. The Angels managed only 6 hits and 2 runs against the the Rays pitching but in the end it proved to be enough. That’s because Jason Vargas pitched an absolute gem going 7 strong innings and allowing just 2 hits while striking out 7.

The Angels bullpen made it interesting when Dane De la Rosa walked the first batter in the 8th but he quickly got out of the jam by inducing a double-play off the bat of Ben Zobrist. Then in the 9th, Ernesto Frieri made things even more interesting by putting two on base with just one out. David DeJesus hit a ball to the warning track for the second out before Frieri finally retired the side with pop-up to end the game.

Hey hey! The Angels are 5 and 1 on the this road trip. They head to Milwaukee for a late-season interleague series before heading home for seven games.
