Happy Birthday, Devon White

There are only a couple of days left in 2013, but before we let the ball drop and ring in 2014, we should stop and wish a happy birthday to a former Angel that was Peter Bourjos before there was a Peter Bourjos. Of course, I can only be talking about Devon White.

First, let’s take a look at how valuable White was during his time with the Angels.

That includes his 5.6 rWAR from his rookie season. But after his age-27 season, the Angels decided to ship White out of Anaheim because of concerns surrounding his offensive ability. Over the next five seasons in Toronto, White did this.

And what did the Angels get in return? Junior Felix and Luis Sojo. The Angels would eventually leave Felix unprotected in the expansion draft in 1993 over concerns about his age. Luis Sojo eventually became a Mariner. And in 1995, well…

Sojo

Back to Devo.

There are no current players or Hall of Famers that share a birthday with the defensive wiz. He does however share a birthday with another glove-master in Jack Wilson as well as Richie Sexson. Sexson, of course, is enjoying his one and only year on the Hall of Fame ballot this year. Other notable birthday’s today include Ted Danson, Mary Tyler Moore and Abraham Lincoln’s successor, Andrew Johnson. Not a bad last of invitees, but not enough star power to make me as jealous as I was of Hector Santiago.

All that being said; happy birthday, Devon White. Make it a Jamaican themed shindig and invite Chili Davis to the party. I’ll bring the rum.
