C.J. Wilson, Kevin Jepsen, Joe Smith, and Ernesto Frieri combined for one earned run in the Los Angeles Angels 7-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals’ split squad Friday.
Wilson allowed three runs, one earned, and struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings. His fifth spring start wasn’t without difficulties though as he labored early, giving up RBI singles to Alex Gordon and Justin Maxwell. The 99-pitch outing was Wilson’s longest of the season and set the table nicely for the Angels bullpen.
Looking at the relievers manager Mike Scioscia sent out, one would think the regular season had begun. Jepsen, Smith, and Frieri pitched the last three frames, in respective order, and scattered three hits without yielding a run. The trio has amassed a 1.59 ERA through 21 1/3 Cactus League Innings.
Projected leadoff hitter Kole Calhoun and catcher Chris Iannetta each hit their second spring training home runs. Iannetta’s second-inning three-run shot to left field scored Raul Ibanez and Howie Kendrick and gave the Angels a 4-3 lead.
Next up, the Halos head to Maryvale, Ariz. where Joe Blanton takes the mound against the Milwaukee Brewers tomorrow. Game time is 1:05 p.m. and it can be seen on Fox Sports West.
