Los Angeles Angels Finalize 25-Man Roster, Shuck sent to AAA

The final round of Spring Training cuts are always the hardest. Heading into Saturday’s Freeway Series finale, Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia had multiple positions to fill including bullpen and bench roles. In the end, outfielder J.B. Shuck wouldn’t factor into his decision.

Shuck reached unanticipated success last season, batting .293 in 129 games and placing fifth in the AL Rookie of the Year voting. Unfortunately, the Angels’ outfield is full of lefties. Despite calls for Matt Long’s inclusion following his stellar spring, the fourth outfield spot went to right-handed batting Collin Cowgill. Unlike Shuck, Cowgill isn’t limited to left field. He bring balance to the lineup and can spell Josh Hamilton and Kole Calhoun when needed.

Another surprise was with pitcher Matt Shoemaker’s selection. Injuries to Sean Burnett and Dane De La Rosa left the Angels in need of a long-reliever and Shoemaker’s Cactus League stats – 12 strikeouts and one walk in 11 2/3 innings – make him a leading candidate. He beats out Cory Rasmus and Brandon Lyon for the final bullpen spot.

Utility infielder Ian Stewart and lefty Nick Maronde round out the final reserve roles as the Halos prepare for their Opening Day showdown with the Seattle Mariners. Below is the Angels’ complete 25-man roster.
