The Los Angeles Angels were looking to unload Dan Haren and his $15 million option before he was set to become a free agent. It appears they have done so in shipping Haren to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for reliever Carlos Marmol. Details are coming in and it may not be the only person involved in the trade. (more…)

Dan Haren on the Verge of being traded to Chicago Cubs for Carlos Marmol?

According to various sources, the Los Angeles Angels are on the verge of trading starting pitcher Dan Haren to the Chicago Cubs for reliever Carlos Marmol.

Rumors have swirled all week that Dan Haren (along with Ervin Santana) would be traded and that the Angels were not interested in picking up either of the pitcher’s options. Even Haren was quoted as sensing that he would be traded. Today marked the deadline that the Angels had to pick up Haren’s option and much as they did with Santana earlier this week, it looks as Haren will be sent packing to another team.

Marmol is currently in the final year of his contract and is owed $9.8 million. Last year, the 30-year old relief pitcher put up a 3.42 ERA in 61 appearances averaging 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Details are still coming but Ken Rosenthal has tweeted that the Angels will likely pick up some (if not all) of Haren’s $3.5 million buy out.

UPDATE: Alden Gonzalez is tweeting that the reports are premature and that a third team might be involved.
