The Texas Rangers will have to wait at least one more day to earn their first World Series title in franchise history. Rain fell on St. Louis periodically throughout the day and with more expected on the way tonight, Joe Torre, Walt Jocketty and Major League Baseball met this afternoon to discuss postponing tonight’s Game Six of the World Series. The verdict: Game Six will be played tomorrow under much clearer skies, with a potential Game Seven- and an even better outlook- moving to Friday.

In a statement Wednesday afternoon the league announced, “Given the desire to play a game of this magnitude without interruption, and an outlook with better conditions over the next two nights, Major League Baseball, along with the Cardinals and the Rangers, determined that making the decision early would be the most prudent course of action to allow fans enough time to plan accordingly.”

The Angels and Rangers have played 5 crucial “statement” games so far in August. The Rangers have won 4 of them.

Statement made?

Texas continued their recent dominance over the Angels Friday night as the usually steady Dan Haren was hit hard and often to the tune of 11 hits and 7 earned runs in just 4 1/3 innings pitched. The Angels went on to lose 11 – 7 thanks to a couple of too little too late home runs by Howie Kendrick and pinch hitter Russell Branyan but the game was never in doubt as once again the Halos offense failed to deliver in the clutch. It started in the first inning when the Angels squandered a 1st and 2nd – no out scoring chance and spread from there.

15 base runners were stranded by the Angels in total.

The Halos now desperately need a win. They find themselves 3 games back of Texas and will turn the ball over to Ervin Santana (tonight) and Jered Weaver (tomorrow) on 3 days rest to see if they can put a halt to the Texas sized butt whippings the Rangers have been giving them of late. For his part Rangers Manager Ron Washington is not scared saying:

“We’re not afraid of Santana,” Washington said. “We’re not talking about Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax. We’ve faced Weaver and Santana before.”

Ron’s right. Why would they be afraid? The Rangers appear to have a mental edge over the Angels this year and that’s something no amount of rest can shake.

While not directly related to the Angels, this certainly qualifies as AL West news, and something I don’t doubt Angels fans take an interest in. Apparently, as I’m sure everyone knows by now, Rangers manager Ron Washington decided to use a little nose candy back during the 2009 season. Just in case that wasn’t enough for you, he also admitted to using amphetamines and marijuana during his playing career. So, basically, if you subtract the charm, charisma, good looks, and acting ability, the Rangers have Robert Downey Jr running their club house.

I’m assuming that he came clean (for the first time ever.. ha!) on the marijuana and amphetamines to get his own spin on the story before everyone else is doing it for him, but there is almost no amount of spin you can put on this story to make yourself look remotely good. Unfortunately for the Rangers, this story came out after they decided to stick with him for the rest of the 2009 season, so they’re a bit over a barrel. Letting him go now would be seen as nothing more than trying to look good in the media, since they’ve known about this for months. That said, if the Rangers don’t find themselves within striking distance of first place by the middle of summer, I don’t expect Washington to be in a Texas uniform much longer. The story is out now, and I think Texas will be looking for any excuse they can find to get rid of him without it being for the year-old drug story.
