Angels Take On The Doyers Tonight In Freeway Series – And The Spring Training Awards

The Angels will take on the Doyers tonight at Chavez Ravine in the annual pre – season Freeway series. With the team having left Tempe and now back in the City Of ANGELS we are just about finished with the exhibition season and only 3 days away from real baseball. What better time to take a look at the Angels Spring Training in review and pass out some fictitious blog hardware. And the winners are……….
- MVP – Mark Trumbo : The dude has been Cujo this spring ( more than beastly) on his way to leading the club in Home Runs (6) RBI’s ( 20) total bases ( 48) and Runs (17).
- Most Improved – Peter Bourjos : P-Bo has had a great spring and appears much more comfortable at the plate. Bourjos has posted a .373/.468/.588 slash line while stealing 5 bases and scoring 15 runs. He seems poised to have a nice season.
- Cy Young – Ervin Santana : Ervin has been lights out this spring posting a 2.64 ERA and striking out 16 batters in 17 1/3 innings pitched across 5 starts. Santana’s strong spring is hopefully a sign he is poised to break his good year bad year curse.
- The Jeff Mathis Award – Scott Kazmir: You could argue that no player in baseball needed to have a good spring more so than Scott Kazmir. So the fact that Kazmir went out and proceeded to post a 7.79 ERA while allowing 23 hits and surrendering 12 walks in 17 1/3 innings is not a good sign for Kazmir or for Halo fans. Kazmir’s spring performance was Mathis like. Lets hope that for Kazmir’s sake, spring success for pitchers really is meaningless.
