The Lineups Are In: Plenty Of Bobby Abreu But No Mike Trout In Texas Opener

Last week when Mike Trout was recalled – Mike Scioscia held closed door meetings with both Vernon Wells and Bobby Abreu letting them know that because of the poor offensive seasons that they have both had – their playing time would be cut with Trout’s arrival. Conventional wisdom would have you believe that Abreu would likely sit against lefties (.241/.320/.286) and that Vernon Wells would receive the occasional additional day off when righties are on the hill.
Well conventional wisdom has failed again.
Abreu started and went 0 for 4 against LHP Mark Buehrle on Tuesday (in the 3 spot mind you) relegating Trout to the bench – and guess who’s back in the lineup tonight against Rangers lefty Derek Holland? You guessed it one Bobby Abreu. Bobby will bat out of the two hole tonight again mysteriously relegate Mike Trout to the bench.
If you’re wondering whether or not Abreu’s career numbers against Holland justify him remaining in the lineup the answer is no. He’s gone 5 for 19 against the Rangers lefty good for a .263/.300/.368 slash line.
Here’s hoping Abreu can catch lightning in a bottle.
