Halo Highlights- Weaver Shuts Down Orioles and Makes History

Anytime you can do something that Sandy Koufax did, you are probably pretty good. Jered Weaver is pretty good. Weaver improved to 10-1 with an ERA of 1.96, which leads the majors, as the Angels beat the Orioles 3-0. Going back to 1950, Weaver and Koufax are the only two pitchers to have 10 or more wins and an ERA below two.
Weaver was facing a pretty good pitcher in his own right Jason Hammel. The Angels finally broke through in the fourth when Mark Trumbo singled and went to second when Xavier Avery botched it. After a flyout moved Trumbo to third, Howard Kendrick drove him home. In the seventh, the Angels got some insurance. Bobby Wilson walked but was erased when Mike Trout grounded into a force out, but Trout used his speed to reach base. Torii Hunter drove him home with a double. Albert Pujols was walked intentionally and Kendrys Morales drove in Hunter with a single.
Weaver was masterful, giving up only three hits through eight innings while striking out five. Scott Downs earned his eighth save and lowered his ERA to 0.30. It’s very possible that Weaver will start the All-Star Game on Tuesday.
The Angels and Orioles wrap up the series today with Wei-Yin Chen taking on Brad Mills, who will be making his first big-league start for the Angels and hasn’t appeared in a major league game since last September with the Blue Jays. The game is at 12:35 PT/3:35 ET.
