Halo Highlights- Angels Bullpen Falters in First Game After All-Star Break

The back-end of the Angel bullpen has been solid all year, especially Scott Downs. This time it didn’t work out. Downs gave up four runs in the eighth as the Angels lost to the Yankees 6-5 in the first game since the all-star break. Downs ERA “balloons” to 1.47
Erick Aybar got the scoring started with his third homer of the year. Mark Teixeira hit his 16th homer of the year to give the Yankees the lead. Mark Trumbo continues his damage against the Yankees this year , hitting a three run homer, the fifth straight game in which he’s homered off the Yankees. In the top of the eighth, Mike Trout doubled and Albert Pujols drove him home with a double of his own. Then came the bottom of the eighth. Derek Jeter got it started with a double. Curtis Granderson walked and Teixeira hit his second homer of the game. After two outs, Nick Swisher walked. Dewayne Wise pinch ran for him and stole second which caused the Angels to intentionally walk Raul Ibanez to pitch to Russell Martin. Martin made the Halos pay with a single. He then made them pay defensively when Howard Kendrick was caught trying to go to second on a passed ball to end the game.
The series continues today at 10:05 PT/1:05 ET with Jerome Williams facing Freddy Garcia. It’s Williams first start for the Angels since June 18 when he was put on the DL with respiratory issues.
