When you are looking at the matchup of Jered Weaver and Ivan Nova, you were thinking a pitchers duel. Well you thought wrong. The balls were flying out of Yankee Stadium, and the Angels were able to avoid the sweep as they beat the Yankees 10-8. Two guys in Weaver and Ernesto Frieri, probably had their worst outings of the year, and the club was still able to win. That’s a good sign going forward.

The Angels got the scoring off right away as Erick Aybar and Albert Pujols went back to back in the first inning. The Yankees tied it right away when Alex Rodriguez hit a two run homer to tie the game after one. Derek Jeter drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the second to give them the lead. It stayed this way until the sixth, when Kendrys Morales and Mark Trumbo singled. Alberto Callaspo drove in Morales with a sac fly and Maicer Izturis hit his first home run of the year to give the Angels the lead. Curtis Granderson in the bottom half hit his 25th homer of the year. The Angels added two more in the seventh when Mike Trout doubled, Aybar singled and Albert Pujols hit into a double play which scored Trout. In the bottom half, Eric Chavez hit his eighth homer of the year.

In the top of the eighth, Izturis walked and Peter Bourjos singled. Bobby Wilson drove in Izturis with a single and Mike Trout drove in Bourjos with a double. Aybar squeezed in a run on a bunt. In the ninth, Trumbo hit his 24th homer of the year. The bottom of the ninth was interesting. Ernesto Frieri came in and walked Robinson Cano. Mark Teixeira hit his 18th homer of the year. Nick Swisher walked and that was all for Frieri. Scott Downs came in and gave up a single to Raul Ibanez. After a strikeout and a force Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson walked which scored a run. Kevin Jepsen came in and Rodriguez popped up to end the game.

The Angels head to the motor city to take on the Tigers for a four game set. Ervin Santana will take on Rick Porcello at 7:05 ET/4:05 PT.
