Collin Cowgill is finally ready to start a rehab assignment in San Bernardino

Collin Cowgill has been on the disabled list for what had to seem like an eternity for the left fielder.  There is now light at the end of the tunnel as Cowgill will begin a rehab assignment this evening for the Angels Single A affiliate the Inland Empire 66’ers in San Bernardino.  Cowgill is scheduled to play for the 66’ers both Wednesday and Thursday evening where he will most likely DH in both games according to club officials.  Cowgill has been sidelined with a wrist injury since May 26th.

Tonight’s game will mark the first action for Cowgill in nearly three months.  Before going on the DL, Cowgill was hitting .180 (11 for 61) with one home run, two RBI’s and six runs scored.  While there is still no timetable for Cowgill to return, the fact that he is able to do a rehab assignment has to be considered a step in the right direction for the 29-year old left fielder.  When Cowgill is able to return to the team it will create an ever further logjam with the Angels already having David Murphy, Shane Victorino, and David Dejesus.  Matt Joyce is also nearing a return from the DL for a concussion suffered on July 26th when Joyce and shortstop Erick Aybar collided while chasing a pop-up in short left field.

Cowgill will be the second Angels player to do a rehab assignment for the 66’ers, as pitcher Jered Weaver made two rehab starts on July 30th and August 4th before returning to the mound for the Angels on Sunday.
