The Los Angeles Angels infield has Angel fans confused at times, in a sense that players have been shifted all around the diamond so far this season. The first base position recently took a huge hit, as starter CJ. Cron went down with a broken hand injury during the last series in Baltimore.
The absence of Cron will allow Albert Pujols, Jefry Marte, and Ji-Man Choi to split time at that position for the time being. Cron had been the work horse at first base before his injury, having started there in 58 games so far, with Pujols following him at 25 games. Utility infielder Marte has started eight games at first while splitting time playing second and third base, with Choi rounding it up with four starts at 1st.
The 1st base position is questionable going into the second half of the season, as Cron was one of the hottest hitters coming in before his injury, hitting .357 with four home runs, 10 hits, and eight runs scored in his last seven games.
The other three have struggled with the bat, with all batting barely around .200. Coming into the second half, it’s most likely Marte will start at first with Choi backing him up, until Cron returns. Pujols will likely fill in as the starting designated hitter most of the time.
Theres still room to improve at first with many first timers starting at the position this season. Once Cron comes back, he’ll return as the starter at first, and hopefully to most Angel fans, continue his hot hitting of late. Choi or Marte, most likely Choi, will be sent back to Salt Lake City.
So without any further delay here is the report card grade,
