Angels listening to trade offers for Santiago and Shoemaker

After weeks of little to no noise on the trading block for the Angels, it would appear that calls are coming in about Hector Santiago and Matt Shoemaker.
The Angels have reportedly been getting calls about Hector Santiago and they’re listening. This story was first reported by ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick on twitter. This story is a surprise considering Santiago has been close to the best pitcher for the Angels this season.
Add Hector Santiago to the list of available starters. Several clubs have inquired about him, and the #Angels are listening.

There have also been some speculation that Matt Shoemaker’s name is also being asked for within those calls. Santiago has an 8-4 record with a ERA of 4.32 and 96 strikeouts this season. Shoemaker has a 5-10 record with a ERA of 3.99 and 115 strikeouts this season.
Moving Santiago may seem rash in the short-term. However, depending on what teams are willing to offer, it could pay-off for the Angels to move him.

The idea of trading either Santiago or Shoemaker may seem questionable due to the current state of the pitching rotation. A trade of deal involving either Santiago or Shoemaker would mean that the Angels have given up on this season and are preparing for 2017.
Among the other players to have reportedly been in trade talks are Yunel Escobar, Joe Smith and Huston Street. It’s also been reported that the Angels are not will to part ways with Kole Calhoun, Andrelton Simmons, or Mike Trout.
Until today, the rumors involving the Angels has been quiet. General Manager Billy Eppler has stated multiple times that the Angels will not be sellers moving closer to the trade deadline. Now that the deadline is one week away, the Angels might just get a trade proposal that they can’t turn down.
Currently, Santiago is making $5 million this season and will be eligible for arbitration for the third and final time in 2017.

While no deal has been reported, the news of the Angels listening to offers is a good sign. The only way Santiago should be moved is if a can’t miss opportunity falls in the Angels lap.
