One key of success that the Angels have been facing recently has been the better starting pitching that the Angels have had.

Now, we all know about the injuries to Garrett Richards, Andrew Heaney, and Nick Tropeano which is one of the reasons why the Angels season has gone the way it has.

However, both Matt Shoemaker and recently traded Hector Santiago were having monstrous months for the Angels.

For Matt Shoemaker, in his last seven games, he has had an ERA of 3.97 and a WHIP of 1.21. He has pitched 45 innings in those seven outings and has allowed only 20 earned runs. Not to mention, from those 45 innings, he has only given up nine walks. Even though his record doesn’t show his success on the season as he currently sits at 6-12 on the season, if you’d watched a few outings of Shoemaker, it’s hard to argue that he has not been the most consistent pitcher for the Angels.

Although Hector Santiago is no longer an Angel, his play must still be recognized while he was an Angel. In the month of July, Hector Santiago performed at a extremely high level. Like Shoemaker, in Santiago’s last seven games, he has gone 6-1 and has an ERA of 2.45. His WHIP sits at 1.34 and has only allowed 11 earned runs in 40 innings pitched. His play was so great that he was recently traded to the Minnesota Twins for Ricky Nolasco and a minor league prospect.

Lastly, I definitely have to bring up Tyler Skaggs and his return to the rotation and what he has to offer to the Angels. When Tyler Skaggs went down for the season in 2014, he was performing at an above average level which was very promising for the Halos. Now that he is back and healthy, expect him to get back to his 2014 self which could help the Angels right now.
