It was announced on Tuesday that Angels closer Huston Street will have season-ending knee surgery on Wednesday. This news isn’t a huge shock among Angels fans as Street never seemed to find his rhythm this season.

The Angels are shutting down Huston Street as he will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. He is expected to have the surgery today. Street has struggled this season in his closer role.

Street went 3-2 this season with an ERA of 6.45 in just 26 games, with nine saves. He’s been on the DL since August 2nd, and missed time in April and May due to an strained oblique muscle. Street is coming off a semi-decent season last year where his ERA was 3.18.

Fernando Salas will remain the closer for the Angels as a result of Streets surgery. The question is how much longer will Huston Street be able to perform? The 33 year old has 324 saves in his career since entering the majors in 2005. Street is set to earn $9 million next season, and will have a $10 million club option in 2018.

What’s next for the Angels and Street is unclear at this point.

I don’t anticipate Street being a factor for the Angels going forward, depending on how the surgery goes he could be another C.J. Wilson. While moving Huston during the off-season could be an easy answer, it’s not likely. Street will either begin 2017 on the DL or in a limited role.

The Angels will likely try to move on from Street when the club option takes effect in 2018, with a $1 million buy-out. Hopefully, they can get younger on the mound in the coming years. As players a such as Street continue to age their productivity takes a huge hit.

Next: Prospect Round Up

As I’ve stated before the Angels will have extra money to spend this off-season to improve the pitching staff. Sure, bringing in a high-profile left fielder is important. However, it’s not nearly as important as addressing the pitching staff.
