LA Angels Pitcher Brett Obelholtzer Is Designated For Assignment

The LA Angels claimed a lot of different pitchers off the waiver wire and plugged them in to their beleaguered pitching staff. Brett Oberholtzer was one such player the Angels claimed from the Phillies in mid-August. He didn’t fare well.
The LA Angels brought Oberholtzer him up and he immediately was thrown into the fire right away. Oberholtzer started and did not fare well in his first appearance against Cleveland as he gave up six runs in 1.2 innings including two home runs.
Then Oberholtzer showed a little promise as he gave up only one run in 7.1 innings of work which included a spot start for the injured Matt Shoemaker. In that start Oberholtzer threw 59 pitches and had 38 strikes in three innings. This earned him a second start on September 2nd which didn’t go so well as Oberholtzer lasted only one inning giving up five runs on three hits walking two batters.

From that point forward Oberholtzer could not sustain his early success as he gave up seven runs in his next five appearances over eight innings. Overall in September Oberholtzer posted a 12.00 ERA in nine innings of work giving 12 runs on 15 hits including four long balls.
Overall with the Angels Oberholtzer posted a 1-1 record with an 8.55 ERA. He gave up 19 runs in 20 innings of work walking nine and striking out 16. What was really telling was Oberholtzer’s WHIP of 1.80 and his opponents batting average of .318.

Because Oberholtzer was a lefty some people thought that the Angels might try and keep him next year and use him in their bullpen as a low cost lefty specialist. However, the Angels had other ideas as they designated Oberholtzer for assignment yesterday meaning they have 10 days to see if anyone claims him. If not the Angels can decide to outright him to Triple-A Salt Lake City. Oberholtzer can then choose whether to accept the assignment and remain with the Angels or declare for free agency.
