Los Angeles Angels closer Andrew Bailey to one-year deal.

The Los Angeles Angels signed closer Andrew Bailey to a one-year deal Wednesday.  Bailey was picked up off waivers from Philadelphia last August and was six for six in save opportunities in September for the Angels.

Bailey came to the Los Angeles Angels after Joe Smith had been traded and Cam Bedrosian were lost for the season due to injury.  Fernando Salas was the closer for almost all of August and was perfect in five opportunities until he was dealt to the Mets on August 31st.

Bailey was promptly called up from the minors in Triple-A Salt Lake City and pitched in 12 games in September going 11.1 innings giving up three runs sporting a 2.38 ERA.  Bailey had a 0.94 WHIP and eight strikeouts and no walks.

For his career Bailey is 14-14 with a 3.16 ERA saving 95 games in 113 opportunities.  Bailey pitched in 261 games throwing 270.1 innings with 274 strikeouts and 1.12 WHIP.  Opponents hit a paltry .213 against Bailey in his career.  In 2009, Bailey won AL Rookie of the Year Award going 6-3 with a 1.84 ERA saving 26 out of 30 games. Bailey held opponents to a .184 batting average striking out 91 batters in 83.1 innings for the Oakland A’s.

The signing of Bailey bolsters the Angels bullpen for the 2017 season.  It is also an insurance policy in case closer Huston Street or set-up man Cam Bedrosian are not ready when the season starts.  If Bailey pitches well in Spring Training he could unseat Street and take over the closer role.  Either way Bailey will be a key piece in the Angels bullpen in 2017.

In other Angels news outfielder Shane Robinson was designated for assignment Wednesday and will most likely become a free agent. In 2016 with the Angels, Robinson batted .173 in 65 games with one homer and 10 RBI’s.  Robinson also stole three bases and had a .257 OBP.

With the addition of Cameron Maybin who was acquired in a trade last week, Robinson was expendable.  The Angels most likely will keep Rafael Ortega as their fourth outfielder in 2017.  Ji-Man Choi still could be in that mix and Jefry Marte will probably play a few games in left as well in 2017.
