The Los Angeles Angels game Sunday afternoon really didn’t matter too much as both the Angels and Astros were playing for only pride as they had been eliminated from the playoff race in the last couple of weeks.

However, for the Los Angeles Angels MVP candidate Mike Trout and 11-year veteran pitcher Jered Weaver there was some personal importance to Sunday’s game.  For Trout he was trying to reach three season-ending milestones 30 home runs, 30 stolen bases, and 100 RBI’s. For Weaver it was a chance to possibly say good-bye to only franchise and their fans that he has known.

Trout didn’t waste any time as he walked in the first inning and promptly stole second base to reach the 30 steals plateau that he has reached two other times, but not since 2013.  The Angels scored four runs in the second inning to give fill-in starter Jhoulys Chacin some support during his last outing of the season.

In the bottom of the third the Angels put on the scoreboard a picture of Jered Weaver with his recently accomplished milestone of 150 wins next to it on the screen.  They announced that he is only the second Angels pitcher to ever accomplish that feat (the other being Chuck Finley) and the crowd rose to its feet and gave Weaver a rousing ovation.  Weaver came out of the dugout and waved his cap to salute the fans.  He was scheduled to be the starter on Sunday, but stiffness in his lower back did not allow Weaver to take the mound.

Chacin cruised through seven innings allowing only four hits and no runs while striking out seven batters.  Chacin looked to be in total control on the mound throwing 91 pitches through seven innings.

In the bottom of the sixth the Angels scored three more times.  The first two coming on a two-run double by Kole Calhoun that drove in Carlos Perez and Kaleb Cowart.  Mike Trout then followed with an opposite-field single to right which scored Nick Buss (pinch-ran for Calhoun) and gave Trout his 100th RBI. Trout was  then lifted for a pinch-runner, Jett Bandy.  The Angels fans gave him a standing ovation as well and chanted MVP-MVP-MVP as Trout walked off the field.

The Angels scored their final run of the season on Jefry Marte‘s 15th homer of the season a line shot over the left-centerfield wall for an 8-0 lead.  Houston scored a single run in the eighth off reliever JC Ramirez and then Andrew Bailey pitched a scoreless ninth and just like that this long and tumultuous 2016 season was over.

After the game FOX Sports Alex Curry interviewed Jered Weaver as the star of the game despite not participating in the actual game.  The crowd again gave Weaver a stirring ovation during the interview.  The reason for all the hoopla is the fact that Weaver is now a free agent for the first time in his career and there is a strong possibility we may have seen the last of Weaver in an Angel jersey.

One fan carried a sign around the stadium throughout the game saying Jered Weaver in 2017.  He was met with applause as he made his way around the stadium.  We will have to wait and see what the Angels and Weaver decide to do in regards to next season.

The Angels finished in 4th place with a 74-88 record.  It marks the worst record during Mike Scioscia‘s 17 year tenure and it was also the first time the team had finished fourth place during Scioscia’s managerial career.

So now the task of Scioscia and general manager Billy Eppler is to rebuild and repair what was broken with this year’s Angels team. The points of emphasis has been the bullpen, second base, catcher, and left field. The  starting rotation will need a tune-up as well, although it seemed to perform better down the stretch.

So we will have to wait and see what deals or free agent signings the club will make during the off-season to improve on the club’s 74-88 record.  It will definitely be an interesting off-season.
