A week into the 2016 season the Los Angeles Angels are 2-4 and still looking like an unfinished product, but they still are looking for some things to improve their team. They got some good news over the weekend that C.J. Wilson will be able to resume throwing in hopes of being able to return to Angels in the not to distant future.
Wilson had been in a holding pattern for the last three weeks after experiencing some discomfort after throwing on flat ground during Spring Training. Wilson is said to be suffering from shoulder tendinitis in his attempt to come back from elbow surgery. Wilson will start throwing on Monday and if things continue to progress he could be back in mid-to-late May.
The question will be at what capacity the Angels will use Wilson. There has been talk that they could use the 35-year old lefty out of the bullpen when he first comes back from the DL. Wilson was a closer for parts of three seasons in Texas could be used as a lefty specialist or long man. So help could be on the way. This will be a story to follow over the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned.
In other news the Cam Bedrosian jubilation of making the MLB roster out of Spring Training has ended almost before it began as the Los Angeles Angels have demoted Bedrosian after only two appearances where he went two innings giving up one run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. They have recalled an impressive young arm in A.J. Achter who was lights out during the Spring giving up only one earned run in 10.2 innings with 11 K’s and a 0.84 ERA in 11 appearances.
Achter was used right away by Scioscia pitching a perfect 9th inning Saturday night with one strikeout in a 4-1 loss to the Rangers. It was a curious move by the Los Angeles Angels as Bedrosian has not looked bad in his two outings, but nonetheless it is another chapter in the ups and downs of his career with the Angels. Have we seen the last of him with the Los Angeles Angels, only time will tell, but as with Wilson this could be another interesting storyline to watch this season.
In other moves the Los Angeles Angels claimed pitcher Danny Reynolds off waivers from the Houston Astros. Reynolds actually spent was an Angel 6th round draft pick in 2009 and had been in their minor league system up until this Winter when the Dodgers claimed off the waiver wire after last season. The Dodgers then released the 24-year old Reynolds and Houston claimed him list two days before Christmas and kept him all of Spring Training only using him two innings with a 4.50 ERA. The Los Angeles Angels assigned Reynolds to their Triple-A affiliate for the Salt Lake City Bees.
This is another move to improve their pitching depth in the minor leagues and maybe they really didn’t want to leave Reynolds unprotected after last season and will ne happy to have him back in their system.
One final note which you will see in more detail in my Angels-Rangers series recap is that Jered Weaver who got his first win of the 2016 season also broke a tie with Nolan Ryan atop the Angels career wins list. Weaver picked up his 139th victory moving him past “The Express” who had 138 career victories with the Angels from 1972-1979.
