The Los Angeles Angels had so many injuries this season and since the season has ended another couple of players have had off-season surgery. What are the chances that all will be ready for 2017 Spring Training.
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Kole Calhoun and first baseman C.J. Cron joined the walking wounded this past couple of weeks as they both underwent off-season surgery.
Calhoun had a core injury and Cron had debridement on his thumb. Both players were given a timetable of six to eight weeks recovery time. This means that both of them will be able to resume baseball activity close to the beginning of January 2017.

The Angels had many other injuries most notably Garrett Richards UCL tear in his right elbow. Richards had stem-cell platelet injections and is doing very well in his rehab. He has throw in a couple of fall instructional league games and passed with flying colors. According to his doctor Steven Yoon, Richards should be ready to go by Spring training.
I’m sure the Angels will be very cautious with Richards as they were with Tyler Skaggs so An opening day start may not happen as the team will err on the side of caution.
Albert Pujols who ended the season by sitting out the last five games due to lingering foot issues, most notable was plantar fasciitis. This injury has been a reoccurring problem that has relegated Pujols to mostly a designated hitter role in 2016. Expect more of the same in 2017.

However, if Albert can produce the way he did in 2016 31 homers 119 RBI’s and a .268 batting average, I will take it. With the emergence of C.J. Cron at first base it is not necessary for Pujols to play the field anymore, although he loves doing so.
Pujols will probably miss a handful games to get rest for his feet but he has played 150 + games in four of the five years with the Angels. Pujols has been able to play through the pain and still be productive is a testament to his toughness. Expect more of the same in 2017.
Cam Bedrosian had a break out season in 2016 and when Huston Street went down with a season-ending knee injury coupled with Joe Smith being traded to the Cubs, he became the closer. Unfortunately for Bedrosian that role lasted all of two days as he recorded his first big league save on August 2nd against Oakland. The next day Bedrosian blew a save, and then he was placed on the disabled list the following day with a blood clot in his arm that cost him the rest of the season.

Bedrosian has been receiving treatment, and things have gone well in the process, so barring any setbacks he will be ready for Spring Training in 2017.
The final notable and very scary injury was the small skull fracture pitcher Matt Shoemaker suffered when he was hit in the side of the head by a line drive off the bat of Seattle’s Kyle Seager. Shoemaker has made many strides since the mid-September surgery to alleviate the bleeding in his brain.
Shoemaker is expected to make a full recovery and will be ready by the start of Spring Training if there are no setbacks.
All of this is good news for the Angels, who needed some after the plethora of injuries that befell the team in 2016. If all goes well the only players that will begin the season on the disabled list will be Nick Tropeano and Andrew Heaney who both had Tommy John Surgery to repair UCL tears in their elbows. They both are not expected to be ready until early 2018.

Let’s hope for continued healing for every one this off-season so the Angels will be nearly full strength for a run at a playoff spot in 2017.
