The Los Angeles Angels signed right-handed pitcher Vicente Campos off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. He has posted a career 3.66 ERA in seven minor league seasons and has tremendous upside.
The Los Angeles Angels has already started its flurry of signing guys other teams have thrown away for various reasons. Last season Billy Eppler went after a bunch of these type of guys hoping some of them would pan out and they did.
Jefry Marte, Rafael Ortega, J.C. Ramirez, Gregorio Petit, and Deolis Guerra all had very good seasons for the Angels and could be in the future plans for the team for years to come. So who will be this year’s diamond(back) in the rough, I think it could be Campos.

Campos has a live arm and plenty of minor league success. We all know that success in the minors does not always lead to success in the majors though, so Campos is still a risk. He did get to pitch one game for Arizona last season going 5.2 innings giving up two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Overall in 2016 Campos is 10-5 with 3.22 ERA for five different minor league teams in two organizations the Yankees and the Diamondbacks. He pitched at all three minor league levels A, AA, AAA. Campos pitched 142.2 innings striking out 120 strikeouts with a 1.18 WHIP.

Campos came to Diamondbacks last season at the trade deadline as the D-Backs traded Tyler Clippard to the New York Yankees and in return Arizona got Campos. So what did the Diamondbacks see in 24-year old Campos to make that move, but then later dump him at season’s end.

For starters Campos is still young as he just turned 24-year old. Campos throws a mid-90’s fastball and he has a good change-up as well. In his seven years in the minors Campos is 34-25 with a 3.66 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP. He struck out 435 batters in 480 innings of work while only walking 125 batters which is over a three to one strikeouts to walk ratio.
We will see how Campos does next Spring for the Angels, as he could be a diamond(back) in the rough for the Angels in their bullpen. We will have to wait and see next Spring.
In other news the Angels activated C.J. Wilson off the 60-day disabled. This is only a formality as Wilson is scheduled to be a free agent this off-season. I would be very surprised if the Angels even thought about trying to re-sign C.J. Wilson. The only I could them maybe doing is signing Wilson to a minor-league contract and inviting him to Spring Training in 2017. However, this is a very unlikely scenario.
