Los Angeles Angels Add New Infielder To The Roster

The Los Angeles Angels continue to add more key role players to their roster. General Manager Billy Eppler continues to rebuild the Angels silently through waiver claims.

The Los Angeles Angels added infielder Nolan Fontana to the roster yesterday. Fontana played with Triple-A Fresno last season. Fresno is the Houston Astros Triple-A Affiliate. Fontana had an impressive run last season hitting .195/.268/.262 in 106 games. He also notched 27 RBI’s and three homers.

Fontana, defensively, spent a majority of his time playing shortstop last season. However, he did play some second base and even played third base rarely. While the Angels are solid at the shortstop and the third base post. Fontana will likely get a chance to claim the second base position.

Fontana, a University of Florida graduate, was a second-round pick by the Houston Astros in 2012. He has remained in the minor league all five years since being drafted.

This seems like a good pickup for the Angels. His career slash line is an impressive .237/.379/.347. Plus, he has a chance to fix the hole at second base, battling Cliff Pennington, Gregorio Petit, and Kaleb Cowart in the process.

Fontana is the fifth player that Billy Eppler has added to the Angels roster this offseason. Of those five, two have been designated for assignment. One of those players being Blake Parker, a right-handed pitcher from the New York Yankees. Parker has spent time in the majors. Last season, he appeared in 16 games with the Yankees, finishing the season with a 1-0 record and an ERA of 4.96.

The Angels also designated right-handed pitcher Abel De Los Santos who appeared in 5 games for the Cincinnati Reds last season. His ERA was an alarming 11.12 on the season last year.  However, his Triple-A ERA was 3.54 over 15 games for 2016.

The Angels also added Kirby Yates from the Yankees and Vicente Campos from the D-Backs. Yates played 41 games for the Yankees last season, finishing with a 2-1 record with an ERA of 5.23. Campos appeared in one game last season with Arizona, he pitched 5 innings, allowing four hits.
