Los Angeles Angels continue to tweak 40-man roster

The Los Angeles Angels keep making moves to reshuffle and retool their 40-man roster.  The latest moves happened Tuesday as the Angels designated Gregorio Petit for assignment and signed free agent outfielder Ryan LeMarre.

Petit was a huge asset for the Los Angeles Angels in 2016 filling in at all the infield spots except first base and also playing left field.  Petit got extensive work early in the year as he filled in for shortstop Andrelton Simmons who was on the disabled list with a dislocated thumb for just over five weeks.

The Angels also lost two players who were designated for assignment in catcher Juan Graterol, and reliever Blake Parker.  Parker never pitched for the Angels when he was claimed off waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers.  Graterol played nine games for the Angels in 2016 hitting .286 with three runs batted in. These games were the first for Graterol in the major leagues. He was designated for assignment last week by the Angels and was claimed Monday by the Cincinnati Reds.

The Angels also sent relievers Jose Valdez and Abel De Los Santos outright to Salt Lake City.  Valdez pitched in 25 games in 2016 for the Angels with a 2-3 record with an 4.24 ERA striking out 22 batters in 23.1 innings and 1.41 WHIP.

De Los Santos has pitched in 7.1 innings in two season with Cincinnati and Washington with a 9.82 ERA.  A familiar name Shane Robinson was signed by the Angels to a minor league contract after he cleared waivers.  Robinson played for the Angels in 2016 mostly in left field. Robinson hit .173 in 65 games with the Halos hitting one home run and driving in 10 runs. 2016 was Robinson’s seventh season in the majors.  Five of his previous six years he played for the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Angels also have outrighted reliever/starter Cory Rasmus, left fielder Rafael Ortega, and infielder Rey Navarro to Salt Lake City.  All three of these players spent various amounts of time with the Angels in 2016 and could all earn a roster spot during Spring Training in 2017.

The Angels have also signed a host of players to minor league contracts throughout the month of November including pitchers Omar Morales, Luis Diaz, Justin Miller and Jorge Gonzalez. They also signed catcher Francisco Acaia and outfielder Ramon Flores to minor-league contracts.

In addition yesterday the Angels signed outfielder Ryan LaMarre who has played 26 games in two seasons with Boston and Cincinnati.  LaMarre is known mostly for his defense as he is batting .067 (2 for 30) in his time in the majors.

In seven minor league seasons LaMarre has hit .267 with 46 homers and 215 RBI’s stealing 156 bases and he sported a .344 OBP.  He will fight with Rafael Ortega and Shane Robinson for the fourth and 5th outfielder spots in 2017.
