Los Angeles Angels new edition player profile: Danny Espinosa

The Los Angeles Angels made a splash during the offseason. The size of the splash remains to be seen. Still, the Angels look better heading into 2017.

The Los Angeles Angels are approaching Spring Training with high hopes. The pitchers and catchers are reporting to Tempe Arizona in one week. The first Spring Training game will get underway on the 25th.

Still, the Angels are somewhat of a mystery this season. Angels general manager Billy Eppler is playing with the roster actively. He also is making it unique in some regards. Among the moves, one of the biggest was the deal involving Danny Espinosa.

The trade for Espinosa came as a surprise for most Angels fans. However, in Washington, many believed Espinosa was on the block. Espinosa was vocal, expressing frustration last season. The Santa Ana native has expressed gratitude about being back in Anaheim.

Espinosa has even opened a new Twitter account.

Espinosa will be a vital part of the Angels success this season. The everyday second baseman is going to provide much-needed defense in his new home. The Angels have a solid player capable of teaming with Andrelton Simmons to protect the infield.

Espinosa will also help on the batting side for the Angels. Last season, Espinosa recorded a .209 batting average. He recorded highs in home runs (24) and RBI’s (72). However, he did have 174 strikeouts in 2016 with the Washington Nationals. Still, his defensive presence will be valued this season.

Espinosa was the first major offseason move for the Los Angeles Angels. This move was followed by the deals involving Ben Revere, Martin Maldonado, and Luis Valbuena. These players, along with Cameron Maybin, will ultimately decide the fate of the 2017 season.

The Angels must play to win the AL West with absolute certainty. Once that happens, the Angels will finally have another chance to get their first playoff win in the Mike Trout era.
