The Los Angeles Angels are still making roster moves as they draw closer to Spring Training. Today, they added another veteran pitcher with a minor league deal.

The Los Angeles Angels signed RHP Yusmeiro Petit to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training today. The move was announced by the Angels via Twitter. At first glance, this move is to strengthen the Angels bullpen. However, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register tweeted that Angels general manager Billy Eppler intends to bring Petit to camp as a starter.

Petit has bounced around the league since his career began in Florida. Last season, he played for the Washington Nations starting in only one game. He did, however, play in 36 games last season. His ERA last season was 4.50.

Clearly, Billy Eppler is trying to find savvy veterans to strengthen the bullpen. Petit is the second signing of that nature, with Bud Norris being the first. The Angels will continue to develop young pitchers will adding in some vets to ensure the bullpen is stronger than projected.

The pitching staff of the Angels will likely be the weakest part of the Angels this season. It’s unlikely the Angels are going to sign an ace pitcher that could help the starting rotation. Yesterday, it was reported by Bill Shaikin of the LA Times that Billy Eppler is apparently moving on from Angels pitcher Jered Weaver, who is currently a free agent.
