Just when things were starting to look bright for Los Angeles Angels closer Huston Street, he has a set back.  In today’s Cactus League game against the Milwaukee Brewers Street was scheduled to go 1 inning, but that didn’t happen.

Instead Street, pitching in his first game for the Los Angeles Angels since July of 2016, had to come out after eleven pitches, facing only three batters due to irritation in his right triceps according to the official Angels twitter site @Angels.  The site said that Street will undergo and MRI later today to see if there is any major problems.

Street who had an injury-plagued 2016 season which only allowed him to pitch in 22.1 innings and he posted a 6.45 ERA with nine saves. Street was hoping to bounce back this season and regain his role as the Angels closer, but that could be up in the air now pending the results of his MRI.

The Angels have been very cautious with Street so far, but he had passed every test and his final one was pitching in a live game.  Unfortunately for Street that did not go as planned.

If Street cannot answer the call when the season begins then either Andrew Bailey, who was the Angels closer the final month of the season, or Cam Bedrosian, who had a great season out of the pen last season, will get the opportunity to close.

The Angels re-signed Bailey as both an insurance policy for Street, but also as a potential set-up man for the Angels bullpen which was one of the worst in the American League last season. Bailey had a 2.38 ERA in 11.1 innings of work and he converted all six of his save opportunities.

Bailey also pitched for the first time this Spring today going one inning, throwing 12 pitches (8 strikes, 4 balls), allowing one hit and one walk and he struck out two batters.

The other candidate for the Angels closer role is Cam Bedrosian.  Bedrosian had a break out year in 2016 going 2-0 with a 1.12 ERA.  Bedrosian pitched 40.1 innings striking out 51 batters and he had a 1.09 WHIP.  Bedrosian converted one out of two save chances before being lost for the season due to a blood clot in his right arm.

Bedrosian has yet to see game action due to a strained groin which he injured during a workout on Tuesday.  Hopefully he will return to the mound soon.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler’s decision to re-sign Andrew Bailey is looking like a smart move with this recent development.  There is no need to panic for sure and we will await the results of Street’s MRI to see what his status will be moving forward.

So we will all collectively hold our breath in regards to Huston Street.  After the mountain of injuries the Angels had in 2016, they are hoping to have no major injuries especially on the pitching side of things. At least in this case the Angels have back-up.
