Things are going from bad to worse for the LA Angels. On the eve of receiving the news that ace Garrett Richards is headed to the 60-day DL, closer Cam Bedrosian is now headed to the DL with a strained groin.

Going into the season the LA Angels thought that they had an extreme amount of depth in their bullpen and that it would be a strength on this year’s team.  Well that depth will now be tested even more as their closer Cam Bedrosian, who has been nothing short of spectacular so far early this season, is headed to DL.

Thankfully for the Angels Bedrosian’s injury does not appear to be of the long-term variety as he was only placed on the new 10-day DL. According to Elliot Teaford of the Orange County Register, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Bedrosian’s groin, “It was sore last night and it’s sore today. When you have the availability of a 10-day DL, it makes sense because we want to make sure this gets behind him. Hopefully, this DL time will do that.”

Bedrosian missed the first two weeks of Spring Training games due to a groin injury, but seemed to bounce back nicely as he pitched nine scoreless innings in the Spring upon his return. He has also pitched 6.2 scoreless innings so far this season nailing down three multiple inning saves.

However, on Friday night, despite not giving up any runs, Bedrosian blew his first save by allowing a two-run double to the Blue Jays Justin Smoak which allowed Toronto to take a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning.  The Angels would eventually tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning before losing in the 13th inning on a three-run homer by Jose Bautista.

In last night’s game veteran Bud Norris filled in for Bedrosian in the ninth and nailed down a 5-4 victory for the Angels over the Blue Jays.  The save was the first of Norris’ nine year major league career.  Will Norris continue to be called on to close things out in Bedrosian’s absence is anyone’s guess.

However with both Huston Street and Andrew Bailey already on the disabled list and now Bedrosian, Norris may be the best option for now.  Hopefully Bedrosian will be ready to rejoin the Angels when he is eligible to come off the DL on May 1st.

The only other players on the Angels roster with any closer experience is Yusmeiro Petit and J.C. Ramirez, both of which have two career saves a piece.  So it truly could be a closer by committee situation for the time being for the Angels.

In other news the Angels recalled Kirby Yates from Triple-A Salt Lake City as well as Daniel Wright to help fill the void in the pitching staff.  Yates will be in the bullpen and Wright will fill-in today for Jesse Chavez as today’s starter because Chavez pitched one inning of relief in Friday night’s extra-inning game.

Next: Garrett Richards will be out until at least June

Hopefully the Angels will get some good news soon on some of their walking wounded on their pitching staff and things will start to calm down so the Angels can start to move up in the standings.
