LA Angels Prospects Who’s Hot and Who’s Not: Week Two
The LA Angels minor league season rolls on into it’s third week, so we take our weekly ride and look at who’s hot, and who’s not. As we started last week, we will also take a look at a rookie eligible player not on the LA Angels top 30 prospects list who is playing with a hot hand.
The LA Angels minor league system has often been discussed and lamented as nearly barren, and ranked among one of the worst in baseball. However, talent does exist. Unfortunately, for 2017, much of the most promising talent is in the lower levels of their system. Still, there are players hoping to contribute this year and beyond. Let’s take a look:

Hot: Grayson Long: Double A (Mobile). Long has steadily improved, going deeper in his starts. His last start was a 6 inning, 1-hit effort. Long struck out four while walking one. His previous start he also gave up no runs, striking out seven in that game. His efforts have already seen him get a promotion from High-A Inland Empire to Double-A Mobile.
Not: Jake Jewell: Double A (Mobile). Jewell started strong at High-A Inland Empire (2.25 ERA in 3 GS), but in his first action with AA he has faltered some. While just one start, the adjustment is one to watch as he tries to progress at Double-A.

Hot: Troy Montgomery: Low A (Burlington). Montgomery is not expected in the bigs for another two years, he is starting to show his capabilities. While just hitting a respectable .286, the young OF is already showing a good eye in the batter’s box. With 12 BB to 4 K to go along with plus speed, this could be Montgomery’s breakout season.
Not: Abel De Los Santos Double A (Mobile). De Los Santos has gotten off to a rough start in 2017. Through 3 games he has managed just 2.1 IP to go along with a 10.80 ERA, while pitching to a 0-1 record. In addition, the pitcher has found himself on the 7-day disabled list.
Worth Watching: Jordan Kipper: Double A (Mobile). Kipper was in the top 30 last year, but slipped some in 2017. However, through 4 GS he has shown promise. Kipper’s last two games have been especially strong. Kipper has gone 7 IP while surrending 0 ER to go along with 9 K and 3 BB.
