A match made in Heaven? Possibility of an Anaheim Angels vs. LA Dodgers World Series.

I know I may anger some diehard Angel fans when I say this, but I want to see the Los Angeles Dodgers make the World Series in 2017.  Before you start making threats of bodily harm to me, wait and hear me out.

Up until the last three weeks the notion of the LA Dodgers going to the World Series was almost a given. On the flip side the notion of our Anaheim Angels even making the playoffs was a pipe dream to most and still may be to some skeptics.  Over the last 25 games the Angels have risen up in the standings and have even led the race for a few days to be the second wild-card team for the American League.  Just as the Angels have risen, the Dodgers have fallen.

In the Dodgers case despite losing 12 of their last 13 games, they are still almost guaranteed to make the playoffs as a wild-card (their Magic Number to clinch a playoff berth is 5).  Even with the Diamondbacks as hot as they are, (winners of 13 straight games) it is still very unlikely that they will catch the Dodgers.  This because even if the Dodgers go 8-14 the Diamondbacks would have to go 19-3 to catch them, while it’s possible it is still highly unlikely.

Now back to the point of this article. The Angels have definitely positioned themselves very well to potentially make the playoffs as a wild-card team (right now they are one game back).  Especially with the addition of Justin Upton and Brandon Phillips. However, I totally believe this team has what it takes to be a playoff team and have since Day One this season, although that belief has been severely tested at times this season.

So with the possibility of both the Angels and Dodgers making the playoffs this season I can hope for the dream that I have always had since I was a kid  to finally come true.  My dream is for a Freeway World Series.  Again the possibility of this happening is far-fetched at best, I will steal a line from one of the best comedy movies I have seen in my lifetime “Dumb and Dumber”.  Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) says to his friend Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) “You’re saying there’s a chance.” That’s all I need to dream is a little ray of hope.

Ever since I was a little kid and started rooting for both the Angels and Dodgers (I didn’t know any better back then). I have always wanted to see this.  Both teams came close in 2009 to making this a reality, but my hopes where dashed by A-Fraud Rodriguez and the Evil Empire known as the Yankees.  The Phillies crushed the Dodgers hopes of returning to the World Series for a second straight year.

However as crazy of year as it has been in baseball, I truly believe the improbable can happen.  I have heard Dodgers fans gloating all year, until recently, how the World Series was theirs already. Wouldn’t it be something if the Angels made the World Series and Dodgers didn’t.  Even better though would be if the Angels and Dodgers both made the World Series and the Angels beat the Dodgers.

If this happened I would not care that the Dodgers have won six World Series to what would then be two World Series titles for the Angels.  I would just say to my Dodger friends, remember 2017. The Angels definitely have some work to do to make this dream a reality as their playoff hopes are still very precarious at best, but I will not be afraid to dream the dream I’ve had since I was a kid just getting into baseball. Freeway World Series or Bust!!!!!
