Recently, the LA Angels inked big time international star Shohei Ohtani to a minor league club deal. Soon after, reports of minor elbow issues with Ohtani hit the news-stream and shocked many. Now Rob Manfred and the MLB are investigating an ethics transgression within the league regarding this leak.

Just days after LA Angels signed Shohei Ohtani we began to see news regarding a surprise revelation; Shohei Ohtani is dealing with a minor UCL sprain. Back in October he received a preventative plasma injection, a common and simple procedure in Japan. This medical information was disclosed to all teams during the courting process and in no way did Ohtani attempted to deceive teams into signing him.

Reports that the MLB is investigating this matter began with Buster Olney breaking the news on Twitter the morning of December 14th. There’s no reason to assume the leak came from a rival ball-club, but at the same time it’s hard to imagine anyone outside the MLB would leak Ohtani’s medical records. News regarding the details of this breach are slim at this time, yet given the severity of this issue (a superstar and leaked medical), we may see a quick ramp up of the investigation.

Speculation leads many to believe the leak may have come from one of the 29 ball clubs that lost out on Ohtani. It isn’t wild to imagine one of the teams Ohtani turned down would leak his physical results to ease the burn from losing out on him.

Although teams like the Yankees expressed extreme frustration with Ohtani’s decision to leave them in the dust it would be hard to imagine a club such as them being behind the leaks. Especially when such a team is having a successful offseason.
