LA Angels looking at free agent Jake Ordozzi to bolster staff

BALTIMORE, MD - SEPTEMBER 23: Jake Odorizzi

The LA Angels have the makings of a solid starting rotation if everyone who were injured last season are able to return to form.  However, that’s a big ‘if’. The Angels may be looking for a proven commodity.

With that being said the rumor mill is in full swing and the LA Angels potential target is right-handed starter Jake Odorizzi of the Tampa Bay Rays, who could be available in a trade.  Odorizzi has proven himself over the past couple of seasons and could be a good fit in the Angels 2018 starting rotation.

Odorizzi might be hard to get unless the Angels are willing to part with a top prospect or two.  Odorizzi is under club control for the next two seasons so that could be a really good thing for the Angels.  He has a lot of upside winning 40 games over the past four seasons going 40-36 with a 3.83 ERA with a 1.215 WHIP.

Odorizzi struck out 643 batters in 705 innings for the Rays.  So can the Angels get him and at what cost will it be?  More than likely the Angels will have to part with Jahmai Jones or Matt Thaiss, possibly even Jamie Barria with possibly one or two players at the major league level in order to acquire Odorizzi.

So the next question is would this trade be worth it for the Angels?  Should they give up a couple of top prospects for a potential ace or at least a strong number two starter?

I believe as long as the Rays don’t want the moon from the Angels, I believe that Odorizzi is worth acquiring.  I have faith in Angels general manager Billy Eppler that he will not make a deal that won’t make sense for the Angels.  If the price is right Eppler will pull the trigger on a deal that will land Odorizzi and bolster the Angels pitching staff.

Next: Jahmai Jones: A star in the making

Trade rumors are fun to speculate on, but until there is more substantial talk between the two teams, I wouldn’t go out and buy any Jake Odorizzi jerseys just yet.
