The news that the LA Angels have hoped to avoid this season may be in progress as potential ace Andrew Heaney who was shut down in Spring Training due to shoulder discomfort suffered a setback.
Andrew Heaney is probably the closest thing the LA Angels have to an ace pitcher. He led the club in starts with 30 in 2018 despite missing the first two weeks of the 2018 season with shoulder inflamation. So this Spring when Heaney experience discomfort in his shoulder due to inflamation many people were not overly concerned.
Heaney threw off the mound on Monday and now is experience more discomfort in his shoulder so an MRI has been scheduled for next Monday. Heaney who already had Tommy John Surgery in 2016 is hoping that the injury is minor and that he wont miss too much time. However, for right now it is a wait and see approach for Heaney and the Angels.

For right now Felix Pena is filling in for Heaney in the Angels rotation and is scheduled to start on Sunday afternoon in Oakland. Jaime Barria was expected to be named the 5th starter, but was suddenly demoted to Triple-A Salt Lake. The Angels then acquired right-hander Chris Stratton from the San Francisco Giants for reliever Williams Jerez and Stratton was immediately plugged in to the Angel rotation as the fifth starter.
The Angels have had so many players on the injured list over the past few seasons that people have begun to think the franchise may be cursed.
If Heaney misses an extended period of time it will hurt the Angels pitching staff unless some other pitchers step up in Heaney’s absence.
For now the Angels will go with Trevor Cahill, Matt Harvey, Tyler Skaggs, Felix Pena, and Chris Stratton. Hopefully this group will be able to hold down the fort until Heaney returns and later on J.C. Ramirez and. Nick Tropeano. These additions will be very helpful to the Angels pitching staff.
For now we have to wait and hope that the MRI on Andrew Heaney’s shoulder sohe can get back tot he mound soon.
