The unfortunate death of Tyler Skaggs still weighs on many, including the LA Angels players, staff, media, and fans. Since his death, there has been an investigation with links to one of the Angels staff members, Eric Kay.

While the investigation into the LA Angels is still ongoing, this situation has a domino effect that could take form from the hiring of newly introduced manager Joe Maddon, the current players, and free agents in the offseason.

The first problem that this investigation will impact is the newly hired manager of the Angels, Joe Maddon. There may be questions regarding the investigation once the Angels make a press conference with Maddon, which may distract the organization with the new addition to the club. Maddon may also be asked personally about the investigation which may also influence how his introduction is interpreted by media and fans as whole.

The main focus the Angels will try to be about the new hiring of Joe Maddon for obvious reasons, as it will be a new era for Angels baseball. With his knowledge about baseball, they will most likely try to contain the press conference to just that. However the press conference goes down, there will certainly still be questions about the investigation and how far it will go, and whether Maddon will give his views on the matter is still to be seen.

Another area where this could affect the team is the current players themselves that are still with the organization. According to an article by Jeff Fletcher, “Kay also reportedly gave the DEA names of five other players he believed used opioids while with the Angels, although they have not been identified.”

This would mean that this investigation will be going to players in the clubhouse that have possibly dealt with Kay in the past and are currently on the Angels roster. The safety of these players should be the main goal of any organization and any player that has known involvement about the situation at hand should provide information regardless of what role they played in the whole situation for their own safety and the safety of their teammates.

While it is unknown of the five possible other players, the death of Skaggs should be taken seriously and could have been a wake up call for others that know any possible information.

This situation could also affect the future ability for the Angels to sign any free agents during the offseason as this investigation keeps going on. Currently, there have been many talks in regards to possibly the biggest prize in the offseason, soon to be free agent Gerrit Cole, and the possibility of him signing closer to his home which would be a benefit the Angels could provide.

However, until this investigation is done with, there could be caution for any free agent that could be talking with the Angels and it might affect the players that have any interest in signing there in the offseason. There is certainly a level of trust between the players and the organization that needs to be carried on throughout the signing process, and this investigation could scare free agents if this develops further than it already has.

Finally, the biggest domino that may fall is the organization itself, the Angels, as this situation develops. There could be jobs and other peoples’ livelihoods that are at stake that should be carefully considered. This includes people in the front office, players, and any other personnel that could be involved no matter how high or low their status is in the organization.

Of course, there still needs to be accountability throughout the whole investigation including front office personnel and anyone involved as mentioned earlier. This entire situation needs to be handled professionally and cautiously as there is little known about the involvement of any one else.
