Angels can't seriously consider Albert Pujols if he's still holding firm on wild demands

If one had to put money on who the next skipper of the Los Angeles Angels would be, many would think of Albert Pujols as the safest bet. The fact that he's interviewed for the job before, clearly has interest in becoming a MLB manager, and has familiarity with interim GM John Mozeliak all seemingly point to an obvious Pujols hiring in the offseason.

It may not be that simple, though. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Pujols want a $6 million salary and, "wants control of everything." Presumably that means control of roster construction and philosophy on hitting and pitching.

Those are pretty insane asks. A $6 million salary would make Pujols one of the highest-paid managers in the big leagues and having that level of control would be unprecedented in today's game where front offices hold the majority of the power.

Maybe this is just a negotiating tactic from Pujols and his camp to let the Angels know that he is not going to come cheap and doesn't just want to be a puppet for the front office. That would be reasonable, but if he's really dead set on both of these things, then that is just irrational and unrealistic.

To be fair, Pujols is not a conventional managerial candidate. Usually stars of his pedigree do not return to the dugout after their playing days. That may bump his salary up a bit just because he could be a draw to the ballpark if fans are enthused by the prospect of a big name taking over as manager.

John Mozeliak may not be compatible with Albert Pujols

Mozeliak may be wary of bringing a big name and personality like that into the fold. He is trying to build something new after so many years of disappointment for the Angels and the last thing that he wants is to butt heads with a headstrong manager who understandably thinks he knows best after a Hall of Fame career.

It's notable that Mozeliak has spoken highly of current manager Kurt Suzuki recently. Mozeliak has already instituted some of his own changes by removing Mike Maddux as pitching coach and replacing him with someone he is familiar with. Will Pujols be as amenable and agreeable with personnel changes that Mozeliak wants to make?

If Pujols is willing to back off these reported demands and is willing to compromise and be a collaborative partner with Mozeliak then a deal is possible, but if not then the Angels may have to look elsewhere or just stick with Suzuki.
