Angels just got a tempting Eugenio Suarez opportunity courtesy of the Reds

Could he be a sneaky free agent option?

After sporting an American League worst 62-100 record last season, the Los Angeles Angels front office has plenty of work to do if they finally want to put this team in a position to be capable of competing for a postseason spot for the first time since 2014. At the top of that list for the Angels should be finding a competent third baseman.

This is where a name like Eugenio Suárez could come into play. Suárez had his option declined by the Cincinnati Reds for 2027, and he's now a free agent. Suárez didn't live up to expectations last year with the Reds, hitting 26 home runs but only posting a 102 wRC+ and a 0.4 fWAR.

This should play right into the Angels' hands. Suárez was overlooked last offseason, considering the slow finish he had to the 2025 season, and considering the lackluster run in 2026, the expectation is that he will be in another buy-low scenario.

And at the end of the day, this is a two-time All-Star with the ability to hit 20+ homers, drive in 70+ and frankly just look like an average hitter in said down year. That's leaps and bounds better than the band of regulars the Halos threw out at third base last season. Perhaps a prove-it contract with a similar length to what the Reds signed him for last offseason would make a lot of sense -- and seems very realistic.

Third base should be a priority for the Angels, and Eugenio Suárez could be a fit

The Angels were one of the bottom feeders of the league at the hot corner offensively last season, ranking near the bottom of the league in almost every offensive metric.

The now-free agent Yoán Moncada has shown his glimpses of being the star prospect that rose through the Red Sox's and White Sox's systems, but has never strung it together consistently. He also hasn't remained on the field for 100+ games since 2022. Oswald Peraza and Vaughn Grissom have both been unsuccessfully chasing the highs they had in their rookie campaigns back in 2022. And Los Angeles' most frequented third base option, Denzer Guzman, was a step forward, but still left something to be desired.

Sure, Suárez has his flaws. He's more of a bat-first option in his mid-30s, he strikes out a lot and his average has been above .250 just once since 2019. However, 2026 was a down year and he still managed to be an average hitter by most metrics, belt over 20 homers and drive in more than 70 RBI. Only Zach Neto was among Angels hitters to achieve these same feats last season, so there's no denying that signing Suárez would move the needle for them beyond just third base, but for that floundering lineup in general.
