The Los Angeles Angels do not care for the Dodgers, and the Dodgers do not concern themselves with their little brothers in SoCal. They two organizations do not make deals often, and when they do they are vetoed by Arte Moreno. However, Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer suggested that the two teams could come together on a Zach Neto trade this offseason.
There's no telling if the Angels are going to make Neto available this offseason, but if they are, it would need to be because they've received an offer they couldn't refuse. Not many teams are in a position to make that type of offer this offseason, but the Dodgers are one of the them.
The trade would see Neto head to the Dodgers in excahnge for pitchers Justin Wrobleski and Roki Sasaki, and catcher Daulton Rushing.
Dodgers have assets the Angels need if Zach Neto trade is possible
The Dodgers are all about star-power, which Neto has in spades. The Angels, of course, view Neto as a building block of the future, but they simply have to address their depth via the myriad holes on the roster. Of course, the Angels could view Neto as expendable if Arjun Nimmala looks ready to assume his rightful position as the Angels' shortstop of the future as soon as next season.
The Angels have yet to extend Neto to a long-term contract, leaving many to speculate about his future. Despite the soon-to-be 26-year-old's offensive prowess, his defense has regressed in a major way at shortstop. Perhaps a move to second base for the youngster would be more prudent than trading him out-right, but a package similar to what Rymer concocted might force the Angels' hand.
Adding pitching depth in the form of two MLB starters and a catcher of the present and future could definitely behoove the Angels to move on from Neto. The Angels rotation consists of Reid Detmers, Walbert Urena (who also need a contract extension like Neto), Yusei Kikuchi on an expiring contract, and the underwhelming Grayson Rodriguez. Acquiring both Wrobleski and Sasaki would allow Ryan Johnson to hone his stuff in the minors before another run at the major-league level. Rushing is a contentious and divisive player, but the Angels have a hole at catcher.
The Angels still need finalize their power structure this offseason, and once those positions are filled, the players should not feel too comfortable. Across all sports, organizational turnover usually spells disaster for the rosters. New owners, front offices and managers want to bring in their personal philosophies and want to leave their impact on the franchise based on players they acquire rather than assume. While Angels fans view Neto as a bedrock of the future, the next braintrust could see him as a sell-high trade candidate to round out the roster.
