Arte Moreno sells Angels in stunning development as fans rejoice with new ownership

The entire Los Angeles Angels season has been defined by what's taking place off the field, considering Angel Stadium has been filled with fans begging for Arte Moreno to sell the team. Despite recent indications suggesting that Moreno had no such plans, news dropped out of nowhere that a sale of the team has been completed.

The Los Angeles Times' Bill Shaikin was first to report that the Moreno has sold the Angels to Stan Kroenke, the current owner of the Los Angeles Rams.

At long last, Angels fans have got their wish. Moreno's tenure is coming to an end, and suddenly, there's real hope that the franchise can once again be headed in the right direction. Especially considering how Kroenke has handled operations with the Rams, who enter this NFL season as a Super Bowl favorite.

In hindsight, there may have been subtle clues over the past few months that Moreno may have been planning his exit strategy. The first was the removal of general manager Perry Minasian before the MLB draft. An in-season firing of Minasian certainly didn't align with comments Moreno has had over the years, and suggested that things were about to change.

The greater tell was who Moreno chose to replace Minasian, John Mozeliak. Unlike how Minasian has operated in recent years, Mozeliak has acted with clear intent. Along those lines, just before the sale of the team was announced, Mozeliak announced some restructuring in the Angels' front office.

Mozeliak's role moving forward remains unclear. Despite how he has been acting since taking the job, it's been odd that the team wasn't eager to remove the interim label. As it turns out, it would seem that the sale of the team needed to be completed first before finding a permanent figure to run the front office. Mozeliak almost certainly will be a candidate, but with the arrival Kroenke, it's possible he has someone else in mind.

It should also be noted that the California recently passed legislation aimed that placed the ball in the team's court to change their name back to the "Anaheim Angels". Details of the legislation center around potential development plans for Angel Stadium and what that would mean for Anaheim, and it's now something that Kroenke almost certainly will be entertaining.

There's still a lot to be decided for the Angels, as well as the actual plan moving forward, but if nothing else, today marks a new day for the franchise.
