While on the surface it may seem like Los Angeles Angels Interim GM John Mozeliak’s future with the team is a bit up in the air, for those paying attention it would certainly come as a shock if he did not remain with the team in a long-term role beyond this season.

Still, he has tried to be somewhat demure, as the kids say, with his comments on the matter but he really isn’t fooling anyone.

In a recent article in The Athletic by Katie Woo, Mozeliak made sure to emphasize that he is not under contract beyond this year, saying: “My timeline still has some flexibility, because I don’t want to recommend or do anything until we’re ready. I have an agreement through the end of this year. In terms of what the future looks like, that still hasn’t been determined.”

That’s the right answer to have if a future role has not been fully outlined or announced. It could come off as presumptuous if he starts talking like he’s going to be around for years so it’s probably best for his public comments to remain fairly modest on the matter.

Still, in the same article he speaks about how energized he’s been by helping the Angels and coming into an organization with fresh eyes whereas he’d been with the St. Louis Cardinals for so long that even he said things felt somewhat “stale” by the end.

Angels are operating like John Mozeliak is going to be sticking around

He’s also made some really big important decisions since taking over from Perry Minasian after he was fired ahead of the MLB Draft. The Angels shook up their draft strategy by taking two-way prospect Jared Grindlinger, a local 17-year-old, which is completely different from how the organization has operated in recent years.

The team also traded away a number of players at the deadline which was long overdue and came as a breath of fresh air for a franchise that obviously needs to reload its farm system if it wants to be competitive in the future.

Those aren’t moves that a guy who is looking to go back into quasi-retirement after the season would be given the leeway to make. If the Angels have any sense, and it seems that team president Molly Jolly is a bit make rational than team owner Arte Moreno, they will make Mozeliak the president of baseball operations and allow him to pick a general manager.

He can choose how involved he wants to be on a day-to-day basis but if he wants to guide the overall vision and steer the ship as the Halos try to regain relevancy then that likely gives the Angels their best chance to turn things around. He can say he’s only under contract through the end of the year all he wants but everyone knows the likely outcome is that he will be sticking around for a while.
