The trade deadline changed Reid Detmers’ future but not the Angels' next move

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Reid Detmers survived the trade deadline, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's time to start negotiations on a long-term contract. Quite the contrary, in fact.

Detmers was the subject of much trade speculation, and with good reason. His effectiveness this season combined with two additional years of team control made the left-hander one of the most south-after names before last week's trade deadline passed.

Yet, when the deadline struck, Detmers remained part of the Angels organization despite the fact LA moved on from almost every other known asset. The Halos traded Brent Suter, Ryan Zeferjahn, Jo Adell, and José Soriano. They even found a taker for Kirby Yates, and eventually just cut ties with Jorge Soler.

But don't expect the Angels' housecleaning to stop with those moves. All the August 3 deadline did was put a moratorium on trades. Los Angeles still has a number of trade assets remaining (including Detmers), and if interim GM John Mozeliak is handed the keys this offseason, Angels fans shouldn't be surprised if he tears down the roster to the studs.

Reid Detmers is still on the Angels roster — but for how long?

Don't think for one second that if the right deal came around Detmers wouldn't have been out the door with the rest of the players who were moved at the deadline. If Mozeliak received what he believed to be a credible offer, Detmers would have a new address.

The same goes for Zach Neto. Reports have leaked in recent days that the Angels and Minnesota Twins were engaged in trade talks centered around LA's star shortstop. But neither side was willing to budge before the deadline passed, and that's why Neto is still on the roster.

But once the offseason rolls around and the Angels finally figure out who'll be steering the ship going forward, the new brass will likely be tasked with the job of tying up the loose ends from last week's deadline. Detmers, Neto, and several others could be out the door sometime this offseason.

The only thing that might stop the Halos from a full-blown rebuild are the impending Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations. The fallout from those contentious discussions could impact the Angels' spending moving forward, but LA's still likely to shop Detmers, Neto, and others before the start of the 2027 season.
