2 winners, 2 losers from Angels moving toward new direction with John Mozeliak and Stan Kroenke

There’s been a lot of change for the Los Angeles Angels this season. They have a new owner in Stan Kroenke and a new leader of the front office in John Mozeliak which has given fans hope for the first time in a long time. It’s worth taking stock and seeing who the winners and losers are after these seismic changes which will have effects for a very long time.

Mike Trout

After Stan Kroenke became the principal owner of the Angels following Arte Moreno’s sale of his majority stake in the franchise, Mike Trout was clearly happy about the change.

He’s a classy guy so he was never going to throw Moreno under the bus, but when your franchise player says that an ownership change was “needed” and that it provides the organization a “fresh start”, that’s a pretty clear admission that he is glad Moreno is no longer the one in charge.

While it will still take time for the Angels to be competitive under this new regime, at least there is now hope that Trout can one day get back to the playoffs with the Angels. He hasn’t made it to the postseason since 2014 which is remarkable so he is a clear winner with these changes.

Angels fans

Angels fans have been starved for a competently run baseball team for a very long time, so they are very much winners with Kroenke and Mozeliak taking over. Kroenke is the owner of a Los Angeles Rams franchise that is one of the premier organizations in the NFL and Mozeliak has a history of success running the St. Louis Cardinals.

That seems like a pretty good duo to help steer the franchise around, but even if it takes time or even if the Angels don’t win a World Series with Mozeliak in charge at least fans can now feel like brighter days are ahead for the organization as a whole.

Arte Moreno

There is no bigger loser from these changes than Arte Moreno. He was reviled by Angels fans for years and apparently fans bullied him into selling the team by chanting and protesting for him to do so. To his credit, at least he listened and decided that it would be best for him to step away but it’s just an admission that he was not a very good owner and leaves a very poor legacy with the Angels.

Kurt Suzuki

While Kurt Suzuki was always in an awkward position, being hired by a lame-duck GM in Perry Minasian, all these leadership changes make it feel pretty inevitable that he will not be back as manager. He could still stay with the Angels organization in some capacity after Mozeliak made some complimentary remarks about him, but he may have to wait a bit until he gets another shot at being a manager with some other organization.

These big changes won’t automatically equate to better results, but Angels fans have to feel better about things. Plus, if anything happens and it seems like a positive for both Mike Trout and Angels fans while simultaneously being a very public and embarrassing loss for Arte Moreno then on the whole it’s probably a pretty positive development.
