Angels Prospect Roundup: May 2-8
It was an eventful week in the Angels minor league system. There were three notable promotions, a top prospect hit his first home run of the season, and one prospect continued to tear up the California League. All prospect rankings are according to MLB Pipeline.
1. Taylor Ward, C, Class A Advanced Inland Empire
This week: .222/.300/.389
Season: .230/.306/.270
Ward hit his first home run of the season on Saturday against Bakersfield in the midst of another mediocre week. You can read about that game on MiLB.com here.
2. Jahmai Jones, OF
Jones, 18, is in extended spring training and is expected to begin the season with the Rookie level Orem Owlz, who begin play June 17.
3. Nate Smith, LHP, Triple-A Salt Lake
This week: 1 start, L, 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 3.00 ERA
Season: 2-1, 3.79 ERA
Smith rebounded from his worst start of the season last week to post another solid start, this time against Tacoma. He allowed just two earned runs on five hits over six innings, but took the loss.

4. Victor Alcantara, RHP, Double-A Arkansas
This week: 1 start, ND, 4 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2.25 ERA
Season: 1-2, 4.91 ERA
Alcantara had another so-so start this week, as he allowed just one run in four innings but allowed six hits and walked two against Tulsa.
5. Kaleb Cowart, INF, Triple-A Salt Lake
This week: .294/.400/.412
Season: .272/.339/.379
Cowart was held hitless just once this week, and three walks helped him post a .400 OBP.
6. Joe Gatto, RHP, Class A Burlington
This week: 1 start, ND, 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1.80 ERA
Season: 0-3, 4.97 ERA
Gatto allowed just one earned run in five innings on Wednesday against Dayton, although he allowed four hits and three walks.
7. Kyle Kubitza, INF, Triple-A Salt Lake
This week: .200/.304/.350
Season: .284/.372/.432
The highlight of Kubitza’s week came last Monday against Tacoma, as he went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple.
8. Jake Jewell, RHP, Class A Advanced Inland Empire
This week: 1 start, L, 4.2, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 5.79 ERA
Season: 0-4, 11.07 ERA
Jewell righted the ship a little this week, as the three runs he allowed Tuesday against Lancaster was his lowest runs allowed in a start this season.
9. Chad Hinshaw, OF, Double-A Arkansas
This week: .167/.167/.233
Season: .204/.289/.327
Hinshaw was held hitless in the final three games of the week to bring his eight-game hit streak to an end.
10. David Fletcher, INF, Class A Advanced Inland Empire
This week: N/A
Season: .169/.231/.205
Fletcher was placed on the temporarily inactive list last Monday and did not play this week.

Caleb Adams, OF, Class A Advanced Inland Empire

Adams continued to be the lone bright spot in the 66ers lineup, although he’s getting some help which we’ll discuss in a little bit. He went 2 for 4 with a double and a triple on Wednesday against Lancaster and followed it up Thursday by going 2 for 2 with a double and 2 RBIs.
Tyler Carpenter, RHP, Double-A Arkansas
This week: 2 starts, 0-1, 12.2 IP, 12 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 11 K, 2.84 ERA
Season: 2-1, 1.40 ERA
Carpenter had yet another great start for Class A Advanced Inland Empire last Monday against Lancaster, allowing just one earned run on four hits over seven innings. His great pitching for the 66ers this season earned him a promotion to Double-A Arkansas on Thursday, and he started for the Travelers on Saturday, allowing three runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings and taking the loss.

Hutton Moyer, INF, Class A Burlington

Moyer cooled off significantly this week, bringing his batting average below .300.
Sherman Johnson, INF, Triple-A Salt Lake

Season: .294/.400/.565
Johnson was promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday after tearing up Texas League pitching this season. He’s had a nightmarish time in Triple-A so far, with just one hit, but that one hit is a home run, which you can watch here.
Zach Welz, OF, Class A Advanced Inland Empire
This week: .500/.600/.688
Season: .384/.459/.466
Welz was promoted to the 66ers from Burlington on Tuesday after knocking around the Midwest League. The promotion didn’t slow him down at all, as he had three multi-hit games and doubled in three straight games this week.
