Los Angeles Angels Prospect Roundup: May 30-June 5
The Los Angeles Angels had one prospect rebound from a horrible outing last week in a big way, two Class A teammates each had two-homer games, and a two-time Cy Young winner made his Angels debut. All prospect rankings are according to MLB Pipeline.
Los Angeles Angels Top 10 Prospects
1. Taylor Ward, C, Class A Advanced Inland Empire
This week: .158/.200/.211
Season: .229/.289/.266
The highlight of Ward’s poor week came last Monday, as he doubled (just his fifth extra base hit of the season) and walked against Bakersfield.
2. Jahmai Jones, OF
Jones, 18, is in extended spring training and is expected to begin the season with the Rookie level Orem Owlz, who begin play June 17.

3. Nate Smith, LHP, Triple-A Salt Lake
This week: 1 start, ND, 8.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 2.16 ERA
Season: 3-2, 4.42 ERA
Smith got back on track after his horrendous start against Nashville on May 28 raised his ERA from 3.47 to 4.80. He threw a gem, going 8.1 innings against Tacoma, allowing just two earned runs on two hits while striking out seven. He retired 19 Rainiers hitters in a row at one point. 4. Victor Alcantara, RHP, Double-A Arkansas
This week: 2 starts, 1-0, 10.2 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 1.69 ERA
Season: 2-3, 3.98 ERA
Alcantara had arguably the best two start stretch of his season: On Tuesday against Corpus Christi he allowed just one unearned run over five and 2/3 innings, and he followed it up Sunday against San Antonio by allowing two earned runs on five hits over five innings.
5. Kaleb Cowart, INF, Triple-A Salt Lake
This week: .320/.370/.400
Season: .302/.353/.442
Cowart had a seven-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday, but still had a pretty good week, with three multi-hit games.
6. Joe Gatto, RHP, Class A Burlington
This week: 1 start, L, 2.1 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 19.29 ERA
Season: 1-7, 7.42 ERA
Gatto was shelled in his one start this week against Kane County. He allowed seven runs, five of them earned, on nine hits over just two and 1/3 innings.
7. Kyle Kubitza, INF, Triple-A Salt Lake
This week: .208/.208/.250
Season: .250/.354/.348
Kubitza had one of his worst weeks of the season, with no multi-hit games and just one extra-base hit, a double on Tuesday against Tacoma.
8. Jake Jewell, RHP, Class A Advanced Inland Empire
This week: 1 start, L, 5 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 10.80 ERA
Season: 0-6, 7.51 ERA
Jewell took the loss in his one start this week against Lancaster, allowing six earned runs on six hits and four walks in five innings of work.
9. Chad Hinshaw, OF, Double-A Arkansas
This week: .133/.316/.200
Season: .194/.292/.306
Hinshaw’s average continues to hover near the Mendoza line, although he walked three times and was hit by a pitch this week, making for an average on-base percentage.
10. David Fletcher, INF, Class A Advanced Inland Empire
Season: .169/.231/.205
Fletcher is on the temporarily inactive list and did not play this week.

Lincecum made his first start as an Angel on Thursday against Tacoma. He took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over five innings, although some rust is to be expected with his long layoff. You can read more about his start here.
Cal Towey, OF, Double-A Arkansas

Season: .304/.404/.486
Towey’s batting average was as low as .219 earlier this season, but he’s come on strong to push it over .300. This week, he had two multi-hit games and homered on Sunday against San Antonio.
Grayson Long, RHP, Class A Burlington
Season: 3-3, 1.58 ERA
Long was placed on the 7-day DL on May 30 and did not start this week.
Tyler Carpenter, RHP, Double-A Arkansas
Season: 3-3, 2.52 ERA
Carpenter was placed on the 7-day DL on May 28 and did not start this week.
Hutton Moyer, INF, Class A Advanced Inland Empire

Moyer had a solid week, going 2 for 5 with a homer on Monday against Bakersfield and 2 for 2 with a double and two walks on Friday against Lancaster.
