Not a lot of LA Angels fans know who exactly Deolis Guerra is. But, they should start paying attention to him now.

When you think of the name Deolis Guerra, most LA Angels fans would only assume that he is nothing more than a minor league no name.

However, with the season he has had with the Angels thus far, we better recognize just how good he has been and how brilliant GM Billy Eppler was for signing him to a minor league deal.

Guerra has only had a brief stint of pitching experience is his career as this has only been his 2nd year of pitching. He first started with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a reliever and did not do very well with them. In just one season with them, Guerra pitched in 16 innings and allowed 26 hits. Which averaged out to a 1.74 WHIP which is not very good. By the end of his first season, Guerra had obtained a 6.48 ERA and was quickly released by the Pirates.

But, on December 10th, 2015, the Angels claimed Guerra off waivers and signed him to a minor league contract to play for the Salt Lake Bees.

After being shipped up to the majors and back down to the minors multiple times this year, Guerra has essentially found his place in the Angels pitching staff since June 4th.

So just how good has Guerra been?

To simply put it, Guerra has been stellar when given the opportunity. So far this year, Guerra has pitched 28.1 innings and he has only allowed 22 hits. His ERA with the Angels is a impressive 2.86 and his WHIP is an incredible 0.81. Of course, all of these stats are significant improvements then they were last year when he was playing for the Pirates.

The greatest part of Guerra’s game is his ability to pitch multiple innings. As we all know, the Angel’s relief staff has been overworked to say the least as they have had the 3rd most pitched innings in the AL. His ability to pitch multiple innings in a game is one of the reasons why manager Mike Scioscia has called him “a bright spot of the season”. Having the ability to pitch multiple innings provides the Angels pitching staff that much needed rest that each pitcher can use.

What does this mean for the Angels?

With so many different pitchers being signed and sent down to the minors this season, it’s finally a relief for the Angels that they have a reliable arm they can depend upon to eat up some innings like Guerra has.

If Guerra keeps pitching the way he has been, expect him to solidify his role as a relief pitcher in the Angel’s bullpen who can go multiple innings.
