LA Angels announce that Giavotella & Lincecum will not be promoted

The LA Angels announced Thursday that even though September is the time traditionally when teams call up their prospects and other key players from the minors. Johnny Giavotella and  Tim Lincecum will not be part of this group.

So the question then becomes will we ever see Lincecum or Giavotella in an LA Angels uniform again. I think those chances took a big hit with this announcement.  Lincecum has actually performed much better since accepting an assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake in mid-August.  In four starts since being sent down he has a 4.64 ERA with a 1.48 WHIP.  The good thing for Lincecum is he has over a 2 to 1 ratio of strikeouts to walks 18 K’s to 8 BB’s which was a major issue during his stint in Anaheim.

Giavotella on the other hand has played pretty well since accepting a minor league assignment in late August.  He is batting .296 with a .367 OBP in 30 at-bats over seven games.  Giavotella was designated for assignment mostly due to the fact that he could only play second base instead of multiple positions like Gregorio Petit and Cliff Pennington.  Giavotella while much improved defensively was still considered a liability at second baseman in regards to his defense.

So the question becomes what are the Angels plans for these two veterans.  Both could get a non-roster invite to Spring Training in 2017 for the Angels.  They also could try to land a free agent contract with another team as well.  Will there much demand for either Lincecum or Giavotella during the off-season?  Most likely not.  A team could take a chance on one of them if they are desperate for someone with major league experience.

Lincecum is definitely more intriguing because of his track-record (back-to-back Cy Young Awards and his past performance in general.  If he can show good command and the ability to get people out.

Giavotella on the other hand is not going to find as much interest as Lincecum, but hopefully he will get an opportunity somewhere to use his talents.  Giavotella is also a good guy in the clubhouse.

So while this news may not be very good at this point for either Giavotella or Lincecum, there is still hope for both of them.  It will depend on their performance next spring.  For now they will just get the opportunity to work this Winter and hopefully be ready for an opportunity next season to try to make a Major League roster.
